Meet Carrie Gurule: An New Mexico native and the first female winemaker in Gruet's history

Our story began with Gilbert Gruet's French Champagne house in 1952, but found its perfect expression when we discovered the remarkable terroir of New Mexico in 1984.

What makes New Mexico a special place to grow grapes?

At an elevation of 6000 feet, it can mean shorter growing season, cooler temperatures and increased sun intensity which influences successful cultivation of our grapes. An arid environment, low humidity can mean it leads to less chances of grape disease or rotting. The aquifers, provide us with year around watering system for our vineyards. And agua bendita (water from the heavens rain) comes at the time of monsoon season, when it’s been so dry the rain washes the dust from the grapes and leaves helping the whole plant just breathe and grow better.

What is something you wish people understood about sparkling wine?

Beyond their blends, all sparkling wines have their own personality due to the difference in dosage levels. I think of our 100% Chardonnay Brut as the extrovert: It easily makes friends! It enjoys attending parties and social events. You can bring this sparkler to Book Club, Potluck, Cooking Class, Graduations, Weddings.
Our 70% Chardonnay and 30% Pinot Noir Brut is more of an introvert. Presents with such a calm confidence. But a very strong presence. This is for those milestone celebrations.
I can't wait for you to experience what we've been crafting here. You'll love these wines, I promise.
