Meet Chris Fulkerson: Wine, community, and making people happier

I came to wine in 2019, and honestly, I haven't looked back.

I started at Browne's Seattle tasting room one day a week, became full time quickly, then helped set up the Bellevue location with Todd Ivester, my right hand man. I dove into Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) training quickly after starting in wine, before tackling WSET 2 and 3. Four and a half years later, I'm still here, still learning, and still loving every conversation that happens across the tasting room bar

What I'm drinking right now

Browne Family Mural Collection GSM is my favorite bottle on OkSomm right now. While GSM doesn't have the same recognition as Cabs and Merlots, the blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, especially in Washington, is world-class but rarely comes with the heavy price tag. I also like that it has a little less body than the cab/merlot blends, so it serves very well as a glass of wine without needing a food accompaniment.

Browne Family Bitner Estate Brut Rosé (#2) is the perfect transitional bottle as we start to defrost from winter and head towards spring, with fresh berries and florals that feel like having summer strawberries while sitting in a rose garden.

Browne Family Bitner Estate Sauvignon Blanc (#3) is crisp and refreshing with beautiful peach and guava nectar that dances on the palate, great for having time with friends on a nice sunny day or when you're willing summer to get here just a little bit sooner.

Getting Personal

What are you loving right now, outside of wine?
Cooking homemade ravioli. Warm cozy flannels. I think I like winter because you can bundle up in blanket-like clothes. Card tricks and fancy decks of cards. And puppy cuddles, always. Christina, (my wife, we're celebrating 25 years in August) and I are looking at puppies. Winston, my Cavapoo, might have some competition.

Famous figure you most identify with?
I'm a big fan of Robin Williams. He had such depth, an undercurrent of depression, but such a beautiful way of using it to serve others by bringing them joy. He once said, "I don't know how much value I have in this universe, but I do know that I've made a few people happier than they would have been without me." That resonates with me.

What draws me to wine

Wine has a way of bringing people out of their routine around a table with some food, allowing them to relax, connect, and be in community. I think our hurried society really needs these spaces to get back to the basics: eating, drinking, and enjoying good company.

Wine isn't just a beverage. It's culture, history, art, and science. It's crazy to me that vines, soil, weather, water, and a skilled craftsman can make such an incredibly interesting thing.

You'll love these wines. I promise.
